    Who can fight you

    In the Wilderness the range is your combat level plus or minus the Wilderness level. A PvP world adds 15 to that, and gives you 15 either side everywhere else.

    Hitpoints comes with the training. Every 4 experience you earn in Attack, Strength, Defence or Ranged through combat brings 1.33 in Hitpoints, so the tables count the Hitpoints levels a plan gives you. Untick the box if you train with a cannon. Magic depends on how you train it. Alchemy, enchanting and teleports give no Hitpoints. A combat spell gives 2 Magic experience per damage plus its casting experience, against 1.33 Hitpoints per damage: about 1 Hitpoints for every 5 Magic on one target, and about 1 for every 2 when Ice Burst or Ice Barrage hits a full stack. Both are estimates, rounded down. Typed levels start at the bottom of the level. Load your display name to use your real experience, which is often most of the way to the next level already. Formula and requirements checked against the OSRS Wiki on 18 September 2026.

    How combat level is worked out

    Your combat level is a base that every account shares, plus the strongest of three attack styles. Only the strongest style counts. The other two add nothing until one of them overtakes it.

    Base = (Defence + Hitpoints + half your Prayer, rounded down) ÷ 4
    Melee = (Attack + Strength) × 0.325
    Ranged = (Ranged × 1.5, rounded down) × 0.325
    Magic = (Magic × 1.5, rounded down) × 0.325
    Combat level = Base + the highest of the three, rounded down

    A new account has 10 Hitpoints and 1 in everything else, which is 2.75 plus 0.65: level 3. Every skill at 99 is 61.75 plus 64.35: level 126, the highest there is.

    What one level is worth

    • Defence and Hitpoints: 0.25 of a combat level each.
    • Prayer: 0.25 for every second level. Going from 43 to 44 counts, 44 to 45 does not.
    • Attack and Strength: 0.325 each, when melee is your strongest style.
    • Ranged and Magic: 0.4875 a level on average, when that style is your strongest. The 1.5 is rounded down, so reaching an even level adds 0.65 and reaching an odd one adds 0.325.

    Those are levels, and the experience behind a level varies a great deal. At 70 Attack, Strength, Defence and Hitpoints with 43 Prayer you are combat level 85, and 86 is one Prayer level away at 5,310 experience or one Defence level away at 76,818. That gap is what the tables above measure.

    Melee, ranged or magic based

    Ranged and Magic each count for one and a half levels, so 60 Ranged matches a combined 90 in Attack and Strength. Level 99 in either is worth 148. Once your Attack and Strength add up to 149 your account is melee based for good, and an account that never trains melee stops at combat level 109.

    This is why a pure can take Ranged or Magic a long way at no cost to combat level: the levels only start to count once they pass the style that is already on top. The style cards above show the level where each of yours would take over.

    Why your combat level did not go up

    Combat level rounds down, so a level that leaves you at 85.98 still reads 85. Three things cause most of the surprises. A Prayer level that takes you to an odd number adds nothing. A level in a style that is not your strongest adds nothing. And a quarter of a level from Defence or Hitpoints only shows once the quarters add up past the next whole number.
