What your runes cost

Every cast uses a nature rune. Fire runes are free from any fire staff, and Bryophyta's staff saves the nature rune one cast in fifteen.

Rune cost of a cast with each setup
SetupA castA sessionCostsPays for itself

Items are priced at what they cost to buy right now, and the price moves as you buy, so a large order pays a little more than the first item did. A figure with a ~ is limited by what trades: the plan never asks for more of an item than changes hands in 24 minutes. An item with no buy limit on record is listed and never planned. Nothing here is taxed: the Grand Exchange takes its 2% from the seller, and the coins from a cast are not a sale. Spell figures checked against the OSRS Wiki on 19 September 2026.

How high alch profit is worked out

High Level Alchemy turns an item into coins equal to 60% of its store value, rounded down. The Grand Exchange price plays no part in what the spell pays, which is why some items alch for more than they cost. A cast uses one nature rune and five fire runes, so the profit on one cast is the alch value, less the item, less the runes.

Profit a cast = alch value − item price − nature rune − fire runes
Profit over a buy limit = profit a cast × the most you can buy in four hours

The spell needs 55 Magic, gives 65 experience and takes five game ticks, three seconds, so an hour is 1,200 casts and 78,000 experience. Low Level Alchemy needs 21 Magic, pays 40% of the value, gives 31 experience and casts every three ticks, 2,000 an hour.

Why the biggest profit a cast is rarely the best item

A list sorted by profit a cast puts rare cosmetics and poisoned spears at the top, items that sell a handful a day. You cannot alch what nobody is selling. Two things decide what an item is really worth to you: its buy limit, which resets four hours after your first purchase, and how many change hands in a day. The table above ranks by profit across one buy limit with both applied, so the top of it is a list you can act on.

How many casts from 55 to 99 Magic

Level 55 to 99 is 12,867,795 experience, which is 197,967 casts of High Level Alchemy and about 165 hours of casting. Set your own levels on the left and the goal table gives the casts, sessions, nature runes and the coins made or spent on the way. Every other way to train the skill is on the Magic calculator.

What to alch for a set value

Some tasks ask for a single cast on something worth a set amount, 30,000 coins for example. The spell hands most of an item's price straight back, so the item to buy is the one whose price sits closest to its alch value, whatever it costs up front. Type the amount into the finder and it lists the items that qualify, best first, and leaves out anything too thinly traded to buy today.

Fire staves, the tome of fire and Bryophyta's staff

Any fire staff supplies the five fire runes, and a staff of fire costs less than an hour of them. A tome of fire does the same from the shield slot with a single charge in it, and a non-combat spell never uses that charge. Bryophyta's staff holds nature runes and has a 1 in 15 chance to save one each cast, so a rune lasts fifteen fourteenths as long. It fills the weapon slot, so pair it with the tome or pay for fire runes. The rune table works out how many casts each setup takes to pay for itself at today's prices.

Alching questions

Can you alch noted items? Yes. Both alchemy spells work on notes, one item a cast, which is how long sessions avoid the bank.

Why does the game warn me? A warning appears before alching an item with a Grand Exchange value of 1,000 coins or more. The threshold is in the Warnings tab of the settings, and raising it keeps a fast session from stalling on every cast.

Do free casts count? Explorer's ring 4 casts High Level Alchemy 30 times a day without runes, and the Fountain of Rune in the Wilderness removes the rune cost altogether. Neither gives any Magic experience, so both are left out of the plan.
