The cheapest way to fill the crucible

A smithed item melts down for one bar fewer than it took to make, and some cost less than the bars inside them.

Every figure is an average sword with no mistakes. Kovac's commissions are random, so a real hour lands a little above or below. Metal is priced at what it costs to buy right now, and Kovac's coins are never taxed because they are not a Grand Exchange sale. A figure with a ~ is an estimate: the pace of a three-section sword, and anything that counts the Smiths' Uniform. An item is only offered in place of bars when at least one buy limit of it trades in a day. The small experience paid while refining is not counted. Figures checked against the OSRS Wiki on 20 September 2026.

How a Giants' Foundry sword is scored

Kovac pays on one number, the sword's quality, which is the metal score of what went into the crucible plus the mould score of the forte, blade and tip you set. Experience, coins and Foundry Reputation all follow from it, so every point of quality is worth having before the first hammer falls.

Quality = metal score + mould score
Experience = (quality² ÷ 73 + quality × 1.5 + 1) × 30, each part rounded down
Coins = experience × 2  ·  Reputation = quality

A sword of quality 0 pays 30 experience and the best possible sword, quality 199, pays 25,230. Because quality is squared, the last twenty points are worth far more than the first twenty.

Why two metals beat one

The crucible holds 28 bars. A single metal scores ten times its tier, so pure rune is 60. Two metals multiply: an even split of adamant and rune scores 130, more than twice pure rune, for less money. A third metal adds nothing, because the game only counts the two you used most. The score also decides how hard the sword is to refine: under 20 is three sections, 20 to 59 four, 60 to 89 five, 90 to 119 six, and 120 or more seven. Swords of six or seven sections get a third sweet spot.

The even split is not always the one to make. 19 adamant and 9 rune scores 118, one step easier than the even split's 130, and costs far less in rune bars. The alloy table above prices every split at today's bar prices, so the trade is in front of you.

The best moulds for every commission

A commission names two styles, and each mould scores points for three. Set the forte, blade and tip with the highest total for the two styles asked for. With every mould bought the average is a little over 58 points a sword, against 38 with the moulds you start with.

The commissions are not equally likely. The first word is Broad, Narrow, Heavy or Light and the second Heavy, Light, Spiked or Flat, and Kovac never asks for Heavy and Light together. Broad Heavy, Broad Light, Narrow Heavy and Narrow Light each come up three times as often as the Spiked and Flat commissions that start with Broad or Narrow, which is why a mould's worth depends on more than its biggest number.

Which moulds to buy first

All fifteen moulds cost 5,400 reputation and each needs its Smithing level to buy and to use. The best order depends on your level, your alloy and what you already own, so the table above works it out for you. With the box ticked, the plan buys the mould that adds the most experience for its price as soon as your reputation covers it. Two moulds are never the best choice once you can use everything: the Juggernaut Forte and the Corrupted Point.

Does the Smiths' Uniform work at Giants' Foundry?

Yes. Each piece gives a 20% chance of extra progress on every refining action, and the full set makes it certain. The uniform changes how fast a sword is finished and never its quality, so it raises experience an hour and leaves experience a sword alone. The four pieces cost 15,000 reputation. This page counts the full set as 15% more swords an hour and one piece as 3%, since a part set only helps on the actions where its chance comes up.

Giants' Foundry questions

What do you need to start? The Sleeping Giants quest and 15 Smithing. Bring ice gloves or a bucket of water to pick up the hot preform.

Can you use armour and weapons? Yes. A smithed item counts for one bar fewer than it took to make, so a platebody is worth four bars and a scimitar one. Putting in more than the crucible has room for destroys the extra.

What is reputation worth? Besides moulds and the uniform, 300 reputation buys a Kovac's grog, which can be sold. The goal table shows what your plan's reputation comes to that way. Every other way to train the skill is on the Smithing calculator.
