A max hit is rounded down at every step. That is why one more strength bonus or one more level often changes nothing, and why the page shows how far the next point is. Set your target. A slayer helmet, a salve amulet, a dragon hunter lance and most other effects only work against the right monster, so they add nothing until you tick what you are fighting. A salve amulet and a slayer helmet never stack; the salve amulet wins. Ammunition only counts with a weapon that fires it. Arrows add nothing to a crystal bow or a blowpipe, and a blowpipe takes its darts from the box that appears under your target when you equip it. How max hit is worked out
Melee and ranged use the same sum. Your level, with any potion, is multiplied by your prayer and rounded down. Your attack style adds to it, then 8 is added, and a full void set multiplies the total. That is your effective level.
The style bonus is 3 for aggressive and 1 for controlled with melee, and 3 for accurate with ranged. Rapid and longrange add nothing. At 99 Strength with a super combat potion, Piety and an aggressive style the effective level is 156, and each point of strength bonus is worth about a quarter of a max hit.
Gear that multiplies your max hit
After the base figure, effects apply one at a time and each result is rounded down. A slayer helmet or black mask on task is 7/6 for melee, and the imbued one is 1.15 for ranged and magic. A salve amulet is 7/6 against the undead and the enchanted one is 1.2. The dragon hunter lance is 1.2 against dragons and the crossbow 1.25. Arclight and Emberlight add 70% against demons. The twisted bow scales with the target's Magic level: 215% damage against 250 Magic, which is as high as it counts outside the Chambers of Xeric.
Some pairs add up before they multiply. An imbued slayer helmet with a dragon hunter crossbow is 1.15 plus 0.25, so 1.4, and with Craw's bow in the Wilderness it is 1.65.
Magic max hit
A spell has a fixed max hit. Your Magic level decides what you can cast and how often you hit, and leaves the damage alone. Three things break that rule. Elemental spells hit as hard as the best spell of their tier you have unlocked, so Wind Strike hits 8 once you reach 13 Magic. Magic Dart is a tenth of your Magic level plus 10. A powered staff such as a trident works its max hit out from your Magic level, potions included: the trident of the swamp is a third of your level, less 2.
Magic damage from gear is added together first and applied once. A slayer helmet, a Wilderness sceptre and a tome then multiply the result in turn. Tumeken's shadow triples the magic damage of everything else you wear.
Why one more level did nothing
The division by 640 means most single levels and most single points of strength bonus fall short of a whole number. At a 100 strength bonus you need about four effective levels for one more max hit. The level table above lists exactly which levels pay out with your gear, and the upgrade table only lists swaps that reach at least the next whole point.
