At nearby prices
The Grand Exchange takes 2% of the price of each item sold, rounded down, and never more than 5,000,000 an item. The seller pays it: it comes off what you receive, and buying costs nothing extra. Items under 50 coins pay none, and the items listed below pay none at any price. Offers placed before 29 May 2025 still pay 1%. Rules checked against the OSRS Wiki on 25 September 2026; item prices are the latest Grand Exchange trades, updated 4 min ago.
How the GE tax works
When an item sells on the Grand Exchange, 2% of its sale price comes off what the seller receives. It is worked out on each item and rounded down, so anything that sells for under 50 coins pays nothing, and it stops at 5,000,000 an item, which a price of 250,000,000 reaches. Selling 100 items at 149 each costs 2 coins an item, 200 in all; 2% of the 14,900 total would have been 298. Buyers pay no tax.
Because the tax rounds down, a price that is a multiple of 50 pays a whole extra coin. An item listed at 1,000 and one listed at 999 both leave the seller 980, so undercutting a sell offer at a multiple of 50 by one coin costs you nothing.
The tax is charged at the price an item actually sells for. A sell offer at 99 that fills against a buyer offering 101 sells at 101, and pays 2 coins of tax on it.

When the tax changed
The tax began at 1% on 9 December 2021, when bonds and thirteen tools were the only items that paid none. It rose to 2% on 29 May 2025, and the same update made low level food, energy potions, teleport tablets, early ammunition and mind runes exempt. An offer placed before that date still pays 1% until it completes.
GE tax questions
Who pays the tax? The seller. The buyer pays the price the item sells at, and the tax comes out of what the seller receives.
Is an offer that does not complete taxed? Only the items that sell. The tax comes off each item as it sells, so a cancelled offer pays nothing on the items still in it.
Is trading another player taxed? No. Only sales through the Grand Exchange pay it.
Why are bonds exempt? A bond already costs a fee to make tradeable again, so it is not taxed a second time when it sells.
Where does the tax go? Most of it leaves the game. Some of it buys chosen items from sellers, which are then deleted to hold their prices up.
What is the most one offer can be worth? 2,147,483,647 coins. The Grand Exchange refuses a bigger offer, so an item priced over half of that has to be sold one at a time.
Would it pay more to alch it? The high alch calculator puts every item's alchemy value beside its Grand Exchange price.
