Gear you already have
Pick a slot to add what you wear. Anything here costs nothing in the search, and the best setup is compared with it.
The search is exact. It tries every weapon and every attack style with every combination of the other ten slots your levels, quests and coins allow, and scores each with the same sums as the DPS calculator, so nothing better is left out. A tie goes to the cheaper setup. Prices are what you would pay today. Untradeable gear is priced from what it is made of when every part can be bought; gear that can only be earned counts once you say you have it. Ammunition and thrown weapons are used up, so they are priced each and not counted in the budget. Gear from Bounty Hunter, the Gauntlet, the PvP Arena, holiday events and other places it cannot be worn in the main game is not offered. Gear, requirements and formulas checked against the OSRS Wiki and the game's item definitions. Prices are live.
How the best setup is found
For one weapon and one attack style, everything the other ten slots add to your damage comes down to two totals: the attack bonus for that style and the strength bonus (ranged strength or magic damage for the other styles). More of either never makes you hit less. So the search keeps, for every budget, only the combinations that no other combination beats on attack, strength and price at once, then scores those with the full DPS sum against the monster. Gear with an effect of its own, such as a slayer helmet on task, a salve amulet against the undead, void, inquisitor's armour with a crush weapon or crystal armour with a crystal bow, is kept apart and scored with its effect, so it is never compared on bonuses alone.
What it counts as yours
Gear you add under "Gear you already have" costs nothing. Everything else is bought at today's Grand Exchange price. An untradeable item that is made from other items, such as ferocious gloves from hydra leather or an avernic defender from a dragon defender and a hilt, is priced from its parts, and an imbued ring is a ring plus Nightmare Zone or Soul Wars points while "Points rewards" is ticked. Gear that can only be earned, such as an infernal cape or a dragon defender, counts once you add it, and the earned gear block lists what would beat your setup.
Levels and quests
An item is only offered when your levels meet everything it needs to wear, read from the game's own item data, and when you have done any quest it needs, such as Dragon Slayer I for a rune platebody or Monkey Madness I for a dragon scimitar. Untick a quest under "Quests done" to take its gear out. Load your display name to fill every skill at once.
Why best in slot changes with the monster
Accuracy matters most against a high Defence and strength matters most against a low one, so the same coins buy different gear for different targets. A monster weak to stab can make a cheap stab weapon beat a whip, and a demon or a dragon brings in gear made for it. Pick the monster you will fight and the whole setup is chosen for it.
Budgets and gear progression
The budget table runs the same search at each amount from nothing to no limit, so it reads as a gear progression for your account and this monster: what to buy first, and which upgrades are worth the most for the coins. Set a budget of your own above to see the best setup for it.
