      Max hit by boost and prayer

      DPS is an average. It is your chance to hit times your average hit, divided by the seconds between attacks, against this monster's Defence level and its defence bonus against your attack style. Pick the monster first. It sets what the target is, so a salve amulet or a dragon hunter lance only counts when it should. The Slayer task box is yours to tick. Time to kill is the monster's hitpoints over your DPS. Real kills vary around it, and it counts no time between kills. Enchanted bolts, Osmumten's fang, the scythe and the keris are averaged in at the rate their effects fire. Special attacks are left out. How DPS is worked out

      Every attack makes two rolls. The first is accuracy: a number up to your attack roll against a number up to the monster's defence roll, and you hit when yours is higher. The second is damage: a whole number from 0 to your max hit, each as likely as the next, with a 0 pushed up to 1 when the attack lands.

      Attack roll = effective level × (attack bonus + 64)
      Defence roll = (Defence level + 9) × (defence bonus + 64)
      Hit chance = 1 − (defence roll + 2) ÷ (2 × (attack roll + 1)), when your roll is higher
      Hit chance = attack roll ÷ (2 × (defence roll + 1)), when it is not
      DPS = hit chance × (max hit ÷ 2 + 1 ÷ (max hit + 1)) ÷ (ticks × 0.6)

      Your effective level is your level with any potion, times your prayer, rounded down, plus 8 and your attack style's bonus. Against a spell a monster defends with its Magic level in place of its Defence level, which is why magic cuts through targets that shrug off a sword.

      Speed counts as much as max hit

      A 4-tick weapon attacks every 2.4 seconds and a 5-tick one every 3, so the slower weapon needs a quarter more damage an attack to draw level. Rapid takes a tick off a ranged weapon. The style table above runs the same gear through every style your weapon has, because the best one changes with the monster: accurate wins against high Defence and the faster or harder style wins once you already hit most of the time.

      What lowering Defence is worth

      A dragon warhammer special that hits takes 30% off the monster's current Defence level, and a second takes 30% off what is left. An elder maul takes 35%, and a Bandos godsword takes as many levels as it deals damage. The boxes under your target apply them in that order, and the accuracy, DPS and time to kill above all move with them.

      How the upgrade table is sorted

      It tries every item in every slot against this monster with the rest of your gear left as it is, keeps the swaps that raise your DPS, and sorts them by coins for each 0.1 DPS gained. The top row is the cheapest real improvement for your account against this target. Change the monster and the order changes with it, because accuracy matters more against high Defence and strength matters more against low.
